I love giving gifts. A carefully chosen gift is like a physical representation of my feelings toward someone. It’s the product of my thinking about them. It is as though I am giving a little part of myself to someone; giving someone some of that love, for it is too much to keep inside of me.
This project explores love, time and relationships of all kinds. Particularly, love as something that develops over time - spending time with people you love, thinking of them when you are apart, and crafting things for them. The hands of the sculpture braid a friendship bracelet, a representation of this investment in love over time. As I craft the bracelet, I think about a loved one and channel this into a physical object. This process of creation parallels the one that I participate in as I create the artwork.
“and when i die, you can crank your watch,
restart your clocks, begin the time
and know that we were infinite
in the moment that you were mine.”
-from Ellen Everett’s i saw you as a flower
This piece consists of two hands braiding a macrame bracelet anchored to a coil. It features a moss texture at the edges of the wrists and the above poem stanza written on the fingers. The sculpture was solid built and hollowed out for firing. The hands are finished with avocado green underglaze, with my continuous line pattern carved into it to expose the raw clay underneath (studio stoneware). The coil structure is finished with Iron lustre glaze with Ivy layered on top to create a dimensional effect. The moss texture is similarly glazed with Tea Dust and Ivy.
